Common Questions & Answers

Why are my teeth sensitive?

Tooth sensitivity usually occurs when a receding gum line exposes the underlying dentin layer and nerve to air, food, and liquids. Your teeth may be sensitive as the result of enamel loss, which can be treated with special toothpaste and gel. Having your teeth examined for enamel loss can help rule out other possible factors, such as cavities and gum disease.

What is gingivitis & periodontitis?

Gingivitis is a milder form of gum disease that can develop into periodontitis if left untreated. Tender and swollen gums are the telltale sign of gingivitis, and these symptoms can develop into periodontitis, causing:

  • Redness & soreness
  • Bleeding gums during and after brushing
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose or shifting teeth

Untreated periodontitis can eventually cause receding gum line, bone loss, infection, tooth decay, and severe pain.

What should I do to prevent gum disease & tooth decay?

Daily brushing and flossing are the best ways to take care of your teeth and gums. By keeping to a daily routine, you will greatly minimize the risk of gingivitis or tooth decay as you age. Routine teeth cleanings and examinations can also prevent plaque buildup, tooth decay, and help you treat cavities sooner.

Am I a candidate for dental implants? How long do they last?

Dental implants are an effective solution to replacing missing teeth and preventing bone loss in the jaw. Because dental implants require a healthy jawbone for support, patients with good oral hygiene are the best candidates for the procedure. Those who smoke, don’t regularly brush their teeth, or suffer from cancer or diabetes, are usually not ideal candidates. Dental implants are permanent and can last a lifetime when cared for properly.
